Toyota makes a bunch of good and tough vehicles. The FJ Cruiser is the Toyota vehicle that they say is for the hardcore off road enthusiast. The FJ is sort of a regeneration of the old FJ-40 of the late seventies and the eighties. THe old FJ was very popular and still is. Just look for one on Ebay and see what they want for a nice one. You can probably buy a new FJ cruiser cheaper than a nice restored FJ-40. Toyota has several four wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicle which include the RAV-4, the 4Runner, the Highlander, the Land Crusier, the Tacoma, and the Tundra, which all have some off road cabailities but the FJ Cruiser is the one they market to the hardcore off roaders. If you ever go to rock crawls or mud races you will see a lot of FJs in various forms and modifications. THe FJ Cruiser is a great machine for the Colorado winters and to get to the ski slopes. My nephew is an EMT and a Fireman and he has one that he loves. Goes anywhere he says. THe FJ Cruiser has only one engine option and that is a 4.0 liter. 24 valve, V-6 that develops 239 horsepwoer at 5200 RPM. That is plenty of power for most anything you could ever want to do or tow. You have the option of a five speed automatic with an electronically controlled overdrive or a 6 speed manual with the full time four wheel drive option. There is a stability control and traction control on the four wheel drive model. I have never understood why anybody would want a vehicle like the FJ in a 2 wheel drive but they make it so somebody must buy it. The FJ Cruiser has a 5000 pound towing capacity which will allow you to tow a pretty good sized boat or a trailer with three or four ATVs or snowmobiles. It has a 19 gallon fuel tan and gets around 20 miles per gallon on the road. It comes in 6 different colors and I personally like the bright yellow and the garnet red. Only one color of interior is available and that is sort of a charcoal and it is a waterproof fabric. Another thing I personally like about the FJ Cruiser is that it comes with a rear mounted full sized spare tire that you don’t have to crawl around underneath to get at. There are several upgrade packages available. I would want upgrade package 2 which includes 17″ 6 spoke aluminum wheels and 17′ all terrain tires, Active Traction Control, a locking rear differential, 115 volt 400 watt power outlet, AM-FM 6 disc in dash changer that is MP3 and WMA playback capable with 9 speakers including a subwoofer you can turn off and on, and a multi information display including an inclinometer, compass and temperature gauge. There is an all terrain package that includes aggressive off road tires, Bilstein shocks and a cyclone air pre-cleaner. That is for the hardcore off road people. They do have one option that is available that I would want and that is a winch/air compressor combination that lets you air up your tires or use air impact tools if you need them. I think that would come in really handy in the winter time on Colorado roads. The FJ Cruiser drives and handles really well for the kind of vehicle it is and rides pretty decent too. It is just another neat and reliable vehicle from Toyota. The only negative I have found is that if you are much over a hundred pounds you will have fun getting in and out of the backseat. They run from 20-30,000 dollars depending on how fancy you want your FJ Cruiser.
